Buhari, Governors’ Meeting On Minimum Wage Deadlocked
The meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and representatives of Nigeria Governors Forum over the N30,000 proposed new National Minimum Wage on
Monday ended in a deadlock.
Sources said the meeting, held behind closed doors, did not yield any fruit as the governors did not change their stand.
The governors had before the submission of the report of the Tripartite Committee that negotiated the new National Minimum Wage, said states can only pay N22,500.
The Federal Government equally said it could afford N24,000.
But Organised Labour, represented by the Trade Union congress and Nigeria Labour Congress, insisted on N30,000.
The governors were led to the meeting by the the Chairman of the NGF and Zamfara State Governor, Abdulazeez Yari, with Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Ambode;
Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; and Kebbi state, Atiku Bagudu, in attendance.
On the side of the Federal Government, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, was in attendance.
